Storing Your Sarees: Best Practices for Longevity
Share
Proper storage is essential to preserve the beauty and quality of your saree collection. Follow these expert tips to keep your sarees in pristine condition for years to come.
Choose the Right Storage Material
Always wrap sarees in pure cotton or muslin cloth. These breathable fabrics prevent moisture buildup and protect against dust. Avoid plastic bags or covers as they trap humidity and can cause yellowing.
Folding Techniques
Fold sarees along the length rather than width to minimize creases on the body. For heavily embellished sarees, place soft tissue paper between folds to prevent embroidery from snagging.
Refold Regularly
Change the fold lines every 2-3 months to prevent permanent creases. This is especially important for silk and delicate fabrics.
Climate Control
Store sarees in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use silica gel packets or neem leaves in your storage area to control moisture and prevent insects.
Separate Storage for Zari Work
Sarees with heavy zari or metallic embroidery should be stored separately, as the metal can tarnish and stain other fabrics over time.
Hanging vs. Folding
While folding is traditional, you can hang lighter sarees on padded hangers to avoid creases. Never hang heavy silk or embellished sarees as the weight can stretch the fabric.
