Caring for Embroidered and Embellished Ethnic Wear
Share
Embroidered suits, embellished sarees, and heavily decorated dupattas require special attention to maintain their intricate beauty. Here's how to care for your precious embellished pieces.
Cleaning Embellished Garments
Always turn embroidered garments inside out before washing to protect the delicate work. Use cold water and a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Hand wash only—never use a washing machine for embellished pieces.
Handling Zari and Metallic Work
Zari work is delicate and can tarnish over time. Avoid getting it wet unnecessarily. If cleaning is needed, spot clean with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Store zari pieces wrapped in yellow cloth, which traditionally helps prevent tarnishing.
Sequins and Beadwork
Sequined and beaded garments should be dry cleaned or hand washed very gently. Never wring or twist the fabric. Roll in a towel to remove excess water and lay flat to dry.
Drying Embellished Pieces
Always dry embroidered garments in shade, laid flat or hung carefully. Direct sunlight can fade colors and damage metallic threads. Ensure pieces are completely dry before storing to prevent mildew.
Ironing Tips
Iron embellished garments on the reverse side using a low heat setting. Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and fabric. Never iron directly on embroidery, sequins, or beadwork as heat can melt or damage embellishments.
Professional Care
For heavily embellished bridal wear or heirloom pieces, professional dry cleaning by specialists in Indian ethnic wear is highly recommended.
